"I think it's really important for gay people and advocates to be tolerant of the different ways people choose to assert their pride. I have had so many conversations with people who object to the way others identify and define their gayness, and I think that is really counterproductive. You can't predict what will open minds, and we can't say whether people discover empathy more from observing conservatism or progressiveness. All that matters is that people do discover that empathy- that it leads them to the knowledge that we are all equally deserving of our rights, not to mention the respect of our fellows. If we can try to see each other with compassion and grace, I think we will be that much closer to helping others do the same."
